Death Notices
It is with great sadness that I mention the deaths of two important figures in insect taxonomy. Roy Snelling was the long-time collection manager at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and an ant and bee specialist. He was quite dynamic and important in the development of the LACM collection. Even in retirement he was an avid collector and died in his sleep on April 21 while on a field trip to Kenya. Less well known to California entomologists was Herbert Hölzel of Bruckl, Austria. A banker by profession, he developed an avid interest in Neuroptera, and over the 44-year period from 1963 to 2006, Herbert authored or co-authored more than 130 taxonomic publications on the Neuropterida. His extensive knowledge of lacewings and their allies broadly spanned three continents --Europe, Asia and Africa--and his exceptionally diverse taxonomic publications are particularly significant for their treatment of many taxa in the large and difficult families Chrysopidae and Myrmeleontidae. He died on April 27 after a long struggle with cancer.
